RCMP in Whitbourne are investigating after reports of a man, claiming to be a financial advisor, who is approaching people offering big returns on cash investments.
The man is asking people to invest up to $100,000 in cash.
The scammer, who identifies himself using different combinations of the names Warren and Bennett – as in Warren Bennett or Bennett Warren – is in his 50s and claims to be from the Gander area.
RCMP warn that he is not a registered financial advisor, and is not capable of investing or providing returns on any amount of money.
Anyone who may have already encountered the man, or who may have provided him with money should contact Whitbourne RCMP by calling 709-759-2600 or making a report online.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency encourages the public to be suspicious of :
- unsolicited investment opportunities (even from friends and family)
- promises of higher than normal returns
- fake cryptocurrency websites
- high pressure tactics
- requests for cryptocurrency payments)
