The member representing Harbour Grace-Port de Grave is calling on government to form an all-party committee to address rising and repeat criminal activity in the Conception Bay North region.
The issue has come to prominence in recent years, as residents grow increasingly frustrated with repeat criminal activity carried out by what many say are a handful of well-known individuals.
Opposition justice critic Pam Parsons says an all party committee could be tasked to develop policy, create new legislation and suggest legislative changes to the federal government while working with Ottawa to help address rising and changing crime patterns.
She cites the recent all-party committee on mental health as an example, which she says led to positive changes.
“Statistics show that outside of metro and Happy Valley-Goose Bay, this is an area of concern,” says Parsons.
She says it’s a top priority for area community leaders who have written the minister expressing their concerns. She referenced the recent devastation caused by wildfires on the Conception Bay North Shore the cause of which is under investigation.
“The crimes are still happening, the break-ins to these properties are still happening.”
