Mount Pearl’s new Community Safety and Well-Being Plan goes beyond tackling criminal issues, according to mayor Dave Aker.
The plan, which was launched following a series of violent attacks in the community in the fall of 2024, was released yesterday.
The plan identifies several focus areas, and outlines how the city will start addressing them.
Aker says they will be making sure that public spaces are well lit – noting that $125,000 has been set aside for that this year, and that there will be increased patrols.
He stresses that the plan isn’t just about tackling criminal activity.
He says they need to look at safety in a “holistic” way, which also means looking at ways to keep pedestrians away from traffic, as an example.
