The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society is marking what they’re calling a “critical step” in stabilizing the organization.
The future of the society, and its annual folk festival, has been in doubt for over a year.
An eight-member interim board of directors was elected on Sunday during a special meeting that involved over 90 members from across the province.
As committee member Jean Hewson explains, the group is now tasked with stabilizing the organization’s governance, finances, and administration, and evaluating the viability of holding a folk festival this year.
“Things are a bit untidy at the moment. We need to do some sweeping and some dusting before we have company.”
Within 90 days another meeting will be called to update on progress being made and to elect a permanent board.
