Marine Atlantic has announced the name of its new swing vessel.
The ship, which is undergoing modification work in Greece, will be known as the Île Rouge to reflect the province’s French history.
The federal Crown corporation says the name was chosen following consultation with the Fédération des Francophones.
Île Rouge is a small island on the Port-au-Port Peninsula, and Marine Atlantic says it is linked to the history of the French cod fishery along the French Shore between 1714 and 1904.
It says the name reflects that history and the present day Franco-Newfoundlander community that still has strong roots in the region.
Marine Atlantic acquired the vessel, formerly known as the A Nepita, through a five-year lease with Stena. It is expected to enter service this fall.
