The Port of Argentia and the Town of Placentia continue to try to work out their differences over the tax structure for the non-profit entity, but the mayor says it is a difficult issue for council as it does not have a seat at the table.
The mayor used to be a member of the board, but that is no longer the case. Mayor Jamie Neville says that means the town does not have the same access to information on issues involving the port as it used to.
The port authority is seeking a tax break from the municipality to enable it to proceed with the expansion of the proposed Cooper Cove wharf development.
Mayor Neville says he is invited to meetings, but it’s not the same as being a full-fledged member of the board with access to all the documentation and financial information that council would like to have.
He says what’s good for the port is good for the region.
“That’s the whole purpose of it – always was. I would like to be able to tell them that we have a loan guarantee from the provincial government but we will have to wait and see how everything rolls,” says Mayor Neville.
