The leader of the Liberal Party believe it’s time for politicians to have a look at the rules around donations.
Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the few sub-jurisdictions which does not have a cap on donations.
The issue came to light this past week after former premier Danny Williams spoke of his efforts to stop the MOU on hydro development in Labrador. It was also revealed that he had donated about $47,000 to the PC Party. That has led to questions about his influence over the current PC government, with Opposition Leader John Hogan calling on the premier to let the public know the status of the MOU.
He says the Liberal Government tried to make changes to the Elections Act after the COVID election, but the other two parties chose not to go along.
“The NDP chose not to participate. the Tories were there for a while and then walked away,” says Hogan. “So it was a bit of a struggle when i was there.”
He says the federal government has a model on donations that this province could easily copy and use.
