A veteran lawyer and advocate for justice is optimistic that meaningful change will come as the system is beginning to buckle in some respects with the closure of courts, reduced services, and troublesome trial delays.
The provincial government is looking at new ways of addressing issues such as a shortage of sheriff’s officers with recruitment and retention being problems not just in Newfoundland and Labradors but elsewhere in the country.
Lynn Moore, who’s based in the metro region, says parking downtown St. John’s is a significant issue for some people who work in the justice system. Judges have free parking.
She told VOCM Open Line with Tim Powers that the provincial government has increased compensation packages for Crown prosecutors and Legal Aid lawyers, but other players in the justice system did not get the same bump-up and find parking expensive and sometimes difficult to get.
“Some feel disrespected; for example, why does Person A get their parking paid for but Person B does not,” said Moore.
