The minister of tourism says she regrets posting a manipulated image of The Rooms on her Facebook page.
Minister Andrea Barbour posted an image of herself standing outside The Rooms to mark Tourism Week.
The image includes an elaborate – and completely fictitious – logo on the front of the altered building.
Barbour was asked about the alteration during Question Period by tourism critic Bettina Ford.
“The photo was either AI generated, or doctored,” says Ford. “The impressive artwork of the caribou, representing the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at the main entrance, was removed with an unknown logo replacing it. Why is the minister in her Facebook post redesigning the entrance to such an iconic tourism landmark?” Ford asked.
“Speaker, I’m not sure what she’s talking about, so I’ll have to go back and look at the picture and get back to you.”
Barbour later admitted to using ChatGPT to create the image for Tourism Week and regrets that the background was altered in doing so.
She has since cropped the AI altered photo from her original post.
