The unemployment rate in Newfoundland and Labrador has dipped back to single digits as Canada gained 88,000 jobs in May.
Statistics Canada says the unemployment rate fell nationally to 6.6 per cent, down from 6.9 per cent in April.
In this province, the rate fell to 9.6 from 10. In the metro region, unemployment was at 7.0 per cent in May, a slight increase from April.
Nationally, employment increased by 88,000 in May, the first significant employment gain since November 2025. The increase in May follows a net decline of 112,000 over the first four months of 2026. On a year-over-year basis, employment was up by 147,000 in May.
