The federal NDP calls the federal government’s new AI strategy “reckless and inadequate.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the new strategy last week.
MP Don Davies says Canadians were expecting guardrails on the new technology, but instead got a “superficial” strategy that he says mouths “the lines of tech billionaires.”
He says AI technology can provide benefits to all Canadians, but left unchecked, it can cause problems as well.
“We know that AI is driving mass surveillance; it’s facilitating fraud, it’s threatening jobs. It consumes huge amounts of water and energy, and it targets the most vulnerable in our society, including children and seniors.”
He’s calling on the federal government to scrap the current policy and develop what he calls a humans-first AI strategy.
“One that protects Canadian communities, Canadian jobs, Canadian small business and Canadian natural resources.”
