An 86-year-old retired police officer is embarking on what he calls a “bucket list” solo drive across the country today.
Chuck Gouett of Ontario leaves from St. John’s this morning, bound for Victoria, BC.
He’s hoping to arrive on the west coast June 29th, after which he’ll drive back home to Meaford, Ontario, with some stops in the U.S. along the way.
Gouett says he originally planned to hitch-hike, but his son talked him out of it. Instead, he shipped his car from the mainland to Newfoundland and picked it up last weekend.
He says there are a few reasons why he wants to do the trip.
“First, and best answer to that is because I can,” Gouett says, when asked about why he wanted to do this cross-country trip.
He will also be visiting some of his old friends, with whom he worked with in the RCMP when he was younger. He says there are only eight of them left.
