The RNC is warning the public about online groups that are targeting and extorting young people.
Police are aware of a violent online group known as “764” which targets, recruits and victimizes children.
In April, 26-year-old Jeffrey Roussel of Quebec City was arrested and charged by RCMP for allegedly promoting and publishing highly graphic, violent and disturbing content. RCMP say he promoted the group’s violent ideology and his victims were mostly teens.
RNC say the extremist group is coercing young people through online gaming platforms like Roblox and Minecraft which are popular among children.
The groups extort their victims by having them create or share material involving child exploitation. They are also known to persuade young people to hurt themselves.
The RNC is urging parents to teach their children responsible online behaviour and to set guidelines to stay safe.
