The Innu Nation is mourning the loss of an elder.
Joachim Nui Sr. passed away on Thursday at the age of 92 in his home community of Natuashish.
The group says Nui was “one of the last” nomadic Innu Elders, and the last traditional Innu drummer in Labrador.
Prior to being hospitalized in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, what would be his final drumming was held on the land near Natuashish.
The Innu Nation says his passing marks the loss of an “irreplaceable voice and a direct connection to the traditions and teachings that have sustained Innu for countless generations.”
