The provincial government says it’s still short 18 sheriff’s officers across the province, despite filling eight vacancies since April 1st.
Late last year, a number of courts were abruptly closed due to staffing shortages.
The issue also forced a temporary delay in the high-profile Dean Penney murder trial in Corner Brook.
There are a total 100 Sheriff’s Officer positions in the province, 82 of which are currently are filled.
NAPE President welcomes progress, but says more work needed
NAPE President Jerry Earle says the new hires are making a difference, but there’s still a long way to go.
He says sheriff’s officers and other court staff have seen a great deal of pressure in recent years, but he’s encouraged by the progress being made.
“What’s happening right now hopefully will be fruitful….because the first issue is that we have to keep the officers that we have, the same as in many occupations, and then recruit.”
