The FFAW would like to see a greater emphasis on seafood marketing in Newfoundland and Labrador in order to sustain and build on the province’s $2 billion fishing industry.
The commercial fishery and the aquaculture industry combined reached $2.11 billion in market value in 2025 – an all-time high.
FFAW President Dwan Street says that’s great news, but more needs to be done in order to maintain and build on that growth.
She jokes that she got off the plane at St. John’s International a few days ago and the first thing she saw was a Big Mary. “I know if you land in Moncton or other airports you see lobster, you see promotions of seafood.”
She says it was a “big blow” to the industry when the marketing arm of FPI was dissolved, and a greater emphasis needs to be put on marketing local products at home, and around the world.
“We need to get back there and make sure that we’re getting it out there and talking about it and promoting it, because if folks see that and they hear that, obviously they’re going to be intrigued and I think there’s a lot of room for that $2.11 billion to grow.”
