The separatist Parti-Quebecois is ahead of the provincial Liberal Party in the latest Leger polling ahead of this fall’s Quebec election.
The PQ has never recognized the 1927 Privy Council decision, establishing the border between Labrador and Quebec.
While the PQ says there is no recourse to contest the historic decision, which was recognized by the Canadian government on NL’s entry into Confederation, the party is suggesting that it could pursue financial compensation for what it calls “this injustice.”
Premier Tony Wakeham wouldn’t entertain the concept when questioned by reporters yesterday about NL’s response, should the PQ win the Quebec election and pursue financial redress.

From the PQ Livre Bleu on seeking compensation for territory it feels was taken from Quebec by the 1927 Privy Council decision
“This issue was settled a long time ago, so I’m not going to have any more comment other than that.”
What a PQ win would mean for the relationship between Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec on hydro development is not entirely clear.
“We’ll have to wait and see,” says Wakeham. “We’re right now at the table negotiating (with the governing CAQ) and we’ll see where that winds up.”
