The City of St. John’s is taking a second shot at putting up a controversial welcome sign at a new location. Plans to erect the sign in Bannerman Park last summer went down like a lead balloon.

The $80,000 structure, which didn’t go over well in the park, will be temporarily installed at the Mary Brown’s Centre in the downtown. Site preparation is taking place this week with installation scheduled for next week but all of that is weather dependent.

Mayor Danny Breen stresses that this is a temporary location, designed to allow people to experience the sign in a real setting with scale, presence and purpose.

The objective is to identify a permanent location.

The public consultation period is open until September 18.
