The NDP wants to see the House of Assembly opened for debate once a deal is formally announced on Churchill Falls expansion.
La Presse is reporting that a deal has been reached, but a formal announcement is not expected until next week.
NDP Leader Jim Dinn says there are a lot of questions that need to be answered.
“Who’s driving the bus on this?” Dinn asks. “Is it the Quebec electoral process?…is it the Prime Minister who has his own political agenda?…is it Michael Sabia who’s the Clerk of the Privy Council, but also the former CEO of Hydro Quebec who’s pushing this deal? The question is, has this party, has this government been outplayed? I don’t know.”
Dinn says he’s writing the Premier to have the House of Assembly reopened soon after the deal is formally announced to debate the questions being raised.
Local Journalist Doesn’t Expect Premier to Bring Agreement to Referendum

Local journalist Alex Bill of allNewfoundlandLabrador also reported Wednesday evening that a deal between Quebec and NL on the Upper Churchill was reached.
He told the Tim Powers Show he’d be very surprised if the premier brings the agreement to a referendum.
“Going back to the point on campaigning on this, it’s so esoteric, it’s so hard for people, including people in the industries involved, the people in the news media, to fully understand, or partially understand, the complexities of these deals. Campaigning on it is an entirely different thing.”
“People are ultimately just going to listen to who they trust, and that doesn’t really help when you’re trying to sell something like this. So, I would be surprised if a referendum happens.”
