Visitors to the Beothuk Interpretation Centre in Boyd’s Cove are being warned about recent black bear sightings in the area.

The tourist site includes a wooded walking trail.

The department of forestry says if you spot a black bear, take note of its behavior. If the animal has seen or smelled you, remain calm and avoid direct eye contact.

Give the animal lots of room and space to get away, back away from the animal but do not run, and if you must speak, do so calmly and firmly.

If the animal has not seen you, back away quietly and leave the area while staying downwind of the animal. Keep and eye on the animal and never get between a bear and her cubs.

Black bear sightings should be reported to the local forest management office in Lewisporte at 709-541-0214.
