The Canadian Federation of Students says mandatory changes made to MUN’s international student health insurance coverage will result in greater costs to affected students.
Federation Chair Nick Keough says international students who qualify for MCP may enroll in their student union’s health and dental plan and opt out of the foreign health plan.
However, starting this fall, students who opt out of that plan will automatically be enrolled in a new foreign health plan at a cost of $104 per semester.

Keough says many students did not want the additional coverage.
“I know this is not a tuition fee necessarily, but I think the fact that we had this tuition freeze announced that we’re going to be experiencing, but international students are still going to have to pay an extra $104 a semester when they weren’t expecting to, is definitely really concerning,” he said.
“Any cost at this point with the cost of living crisis is significant. And expecting to pay the same as what you paid last year to suddenly be blindsided with an extra fee that you can’t even get out of is really concerning.”
