The Mayor of St. John’s says residents no longer feel safe or secure, and that’s what prompted him to write both levels of government seeking a collaborative approach to the proliferation of open drug use and mental health concerns in public spaces.
The city now has a meeting with various government departments and the Premier’s Office to discuss its concerns.
Danny Breen told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that they had not received updates on a number of issues the city thought were being addressed.
“For example, the Police Transformation Commission, where that is, the introduction of auxiliary policing, and just looking at the different resources that are allocated in the city to address the issues that we see every day.”
“We laid out the issues,” says Breen. “Municipalities hear from the residents first, and we bear the brunt, many times, of those comments, but we’re probably the level of government that has the least tools to deal with it.”
