A new school year begins today which means the roads will be busy with school buses and students heading back to class.
The RNC is reminding drivers of a few key rules of the road now that the summer break is over.
RNC Constable Steph Myers says it is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped with its stop sign extended and its lights flashing.

“Stop in both directions. If you’re on a multiple lane roadway, all traffic in that area where that bus is stopped, must stop…we want to keep those kids safe.”
The penalty for passing a school bus is six demerit points and a ticket of up to $1,200 in fines.
Drivers are also reminded to reduce their speeds in school zones and pay attention to road signs and crossing guards. Expect a heightened police presence on roads in and around school zones.

The Mayor of CBS is urging caution on the roadways this morning as kids return to the classroom for the school year.
Darrin Bent says the town has spent the last few weeks working on clearly identifying school zones.
They’ve also been in contact with the RNC about extra patrols.
“We’ve done incredible work over the past couple of weeks getting the school zone markings on the road, making sure that they’re visible and seen. We of course have a 30-kilometre speed zone through all of the school zones in our town, which is very important, and I ask everyone to be mindful of the young people. We have nine schools in this community, over 5,000 students. There’s going to be a lot of activity.”
