Lake Melville MHA Keith Russell dropped a political bombshell this morning as debate on the Churchill Falls agreement was about to get started.
“After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to cross the floor and sit as an independent member.”
Russell says his decision to quit the PC caucus was not a decision he made lightly, “but there are moments of public life when we must listen to our conscience, and put the people we represent first. The people of Lake Melville deserve to be heard, they deserve a strong voice in this Honourable House, and I will continue to be a strong voice to stand up for them, serve them and work on their behalf to the very best of my ability.”
He says he makes the decision with “some sadness, but with a clear conscience.”
Speaker Paul Lane immediately recessed the proceedings to consider the matter and to accommodate Russell in a new seat in the House.

NDP Leader Responds to Russell’s Decision
NDP Leader Jim Dinn met with reporters soon after Russell announced his decision.
“I can honestly say I didn’t see that one coming” says Dinn. “We’ve had our concerns…but obviously this had to be a tough, very tough decision on Mr. Russell.”
Dinn says he spoke briefly with Russell after his Point of Privilege, but it’s up to Russell to explain the reasons for his decision.
