The Innu say they are reasonable people, but they insist on a “fair” agreement on Gull Island and are calling on Premier Wakeham to reach out to them.

Grand Chief Jodie Ashini has said all along that the Innu Nation should be involved in the process, however it was never invited to the table.

Ashini says the current situation is unacceptable as it would result in a significant loss for her people.

The two provinces still have to negotiate definitive agreements and Quebec has to approve the deal in its legislative assembly. Newfoundland and Labrador did so Thursday night.

She says Premier Wakeham has yet to contact the Innu Nation.

“He’s constantly saying he is going to sit down and talk with us but it’s always us reaching out to him. We want to make sure that fture generations are protected,” says Ashini.
