RCMP have arrested two students in relation to an assault captured on video at a school in Bay Roberts and shared widely on social media.

The video shows one student being assaulted while other students watch and film the attack.

Two suspects were identified and arrested yesterday. One young person is facing charges of assault and forcible confinement, while the second youth faces a single count of forcible confinement.

Both are expected to make their first appearance in provincial court in December.

Further arrests and charges are possible.

RCMP are asking the public not to share or further circulate the video as the continued distribution of the incident has the potential to cause harm and further victimize the person involved.

Police are also advising of the dangers of speculation and sharing of unverified information, including information on a person’s health or personal circumstances.

RCMP say the incident also reinforces the “critical importance” of making reports through official channels. Videos and social media posts, on their own, are not likely to meet the threshold for evidence of an offence or to support charges, but might hold investigative and evidentiary value when shared with police.
