With work to remove old fermented fish sauce from the plant in St. Mary’s nearly complete, film crews are on the ground to help showcase a different side of the community.
Earlier this year the town received significant media attention following news that the old plant, which had been left abandoned for decades, would finally be cleaned up – meaning the stench from it would be gone also.
Mayor Steve Ryan says that’s when Publicis Toronto, a marketing firm, reached out to them and offered to put together a tourism campaign for the community – at no cost to them.
He calls the offer “one of the brightest things to come out of the sauce plant.” He says the company is going to promote St. Mary’s as a place to visit, where people can “smell the salt water instead of the smelly sauce plant.”
