The City of St. John’s has decided against committing extra resources at this time to improve sidewalk snow clearing.
The city is likely facing a tax increase as it is, and several members of council are concerned about committing to a large expenditure in advance of the budget process.
The motion called for about $1.35-million in improved clearing and capital expenditure but Mayor Danny Breen says they are already looking at an $18- to $20-million shortfall.

By provincial legislation, municipalities have to present a balanced budget.
Councillor Ian Froude says if they wait any longer, they will not be able to make any substantial progress on sidewalk clearing this year. He notes that Halifax has only about half the amount of snow, yet spends more per kilometre on sidewalk clearing.

Councillor Maggie Burton says walking in St. John’s is not a choice, but a must.
The motion was defeated 7 to 3, meaning that the issue of sidewalk snow clearing moves to the general budget process in December.
