A move to improve this province’s ability to rely and survive on its own fresh food supply received unanimous support in the House of Assembly yesterday.
While it hasn’t grabbed the same attention as COVID-19 or the troubled economy, it’s arguably just as important in the long run, according to the man who put the resolution forward.
Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper was behind the private member’s resolution that aims to see provincial food self-sufficiency reach 20 per cent by 2022. Statistics show the number has increased from 10 per cent in 2017 to about 15 per cent this year when it comes to fruit and vegetable production.
Trimper said the program also includes support for 115 community gardens across the province.
