The RNC say their main objectives are public safety and de-escalation when responding to situations such as the one last evening on the Dominion picket. However, the Federation calls their appearance on the picket line last night totally unnecessary.
Striking workers had been picketing at Weston Bakery in Donovans when police showed up. Unifor saw that very much as an over-reaction given that things had been peaceful but the RNC say their Public Order Unit is highly-trained in de-escalation and crowd management.
Constable James Cadigan says police also have to ensure that no laws are being broken. He says nobody was arrested but the RNC received concerns from other organizations who were not involved and who have seen an impact on their activity.
The RNC says all communication with strike leadership has been respectful. The Constabulary states that its focus is on keeping an open line of communication with parties involved, and “education as it relates to public safety.”

Mary Shortall, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, says strikers have a right to picket and employers have a right to lockout.
She’s angry and concerned and wonders how much it costs to call in all those RNC officers on overtime.
