The province has officially marked the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against gender-based violence.
Against a backdrop of bright blue skies and crisp November air, the purple ribbon flag was raised at Confederation Building. This year’s ceremony was notably smaller in comparison to previous years due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Two families impacted by gender-based violence were in attendance: Lisa Lake, the mother of Courtney Lake, who was murdered in 2017, and Phillip and Debbie Hibbs—the parents of Julianne Hibbs, who was the victim of a double murder-suicide in CBS in 2013.

Both families were emotional during the event, but say it’s important to come out and continue the fight against such violent acts.
Both families had a resounding message for anyone experiencing gender-based violence: find help wherever you can, and get out of the situation.
