The 39th anniversary of one of the darkest days in recent Newfoundland history is approaching and plans are underway to host the annual memorial service during a pandemic.
The drill rig the Ocean Ranger slipped under the waves in a vicious winter blizzard in the early morning hours of February 15, 1982.
Each year Gonzaga High School has hosted a memorial service to remember the 84 crew members who lost their lives on that fateful night.
This year, things are a little different because of the pandemic. Family members affected by the tragedy are encouraged to register for the annual service this year due to limited seating caused by COVID restrictions.
Family members are asked to email amandacraig@nlesd.ca on or before 12:00 p.m., February 10.
The event takes place Monday, February 15th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Pius X Church.
