George Brake, the man accused of threatening to kill politicians, has been found fit to stand trial following a two-week psychiatric assessment at the Waterford Hospital.
The 66-year-old Shoal Brook man is now eligible to apply for bail, which will happen in court on Monday. But the Crown has said they do not want him released.
Brake was arrested on the morning of January 26 outside the office of a Deer Lake candidate after leading RCMP on a high-speed chase along the Trans-Canada Highway and through the town.
Police found 36 different types of knives in the cab of his pickup, including one larger weapon by his side.
The threats to execute politicians, which allegedly included a desire to stop the provincial election, was thwarted by RCMP after they received a tip about Brake’s intentions, but it remains unclear who called police with the information.
Brake has been charged with possessing weapons for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and fleeing from police. Two firearms charges were also added following a search of his mobile home in Shoal Brook.
