Drug enforcement police in this province believe it is making headway of late in dismantling some aspects of the illegal drug trade.
They made two significant busts: one involving raids in St. John’s, Torbay, and Ontario and one in Grand Falls-Windsor.
The two investigations were separate.
Staff Sergeant Kelly Bryan, district commander with the RCMP, says Grand Falls-Windsor police seized 3.5 kg of cocaine worth about $240,000 in bulk but around $840,000 once broken down for street level.
The Ontario-NL bust last week yielded one of the largest seizures of MDMA (Ecstacy) in this province ever: 12 pounds.
Staff Sgt. Bryan is concerned that the trade now seems to involve larger seizures and new entrants to the trade.
He says if the market wasn’t here, the criminal activity to bring these drugs into the province wouldn’t exist. In recent years they have seen a trend towards larger kilogram level drug seizures in the province, particularly cocaine and more recently Ecstacy—which Bryan says is indicative of increasing demand and use of the drugs in our communities,
