Honesty is the best policy when talking about the second wave of COVID-19 with children, says a St. John’s-based registered psychologist.
As the province enters week two of lockdown restrictions many parents are facing tough conversations with their kids about the current situation.
Registered Psychologist Beverly McLean suggests taking an honest approach with young ones and explaining how the circumstances impact adults as well.
She says it’s important to set an example of steadiness but points out that doesn’t always mean upholding an unrealistic picture of positivity.
McLean suggests a sincere response for parents who are struggling to answer questions like, ‘How much longer will COVID-19 change the daily routine?’
She says try letting children know that no one has the answers yet but officials are working very hard to stop the spread of the virus. McLean says it’s important to let children know that as soon as there are answers they will be informed.
