The Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is among those surprised to hear about proposed plans to store nuclear waste in Labrador, stemming from a recent CBC investigative piece out of Quebec.
Wally Andersen says while he’s not aware of the plans he does acknowledge a general feeling throughout Labrador that the region has never received fair treatment when it comes to economic development.
He says Labrador makes a tremendous economic contribution to the province and the country, and the thought that a company wants to use the land as a dumpsite doesn’t sit well at all.
He named Voisey’s Bay, 5 Wing Goose Bay, Churchill Falls, and the mining in Labrador West as just a few examples of the contribution the region is making yet
“What are they going to do? They want to give us something nobody else in Canada wants” he says in frustration.
