One of the country’s few certified professional resume writers is sharing some tips and tricks to stand out from the crowd when applying for a job.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s unemployment rate is among the highest in the country at over 15 per cent.
Marian Bernard says there are three common mistakes that people should avoid with their resumes; Avoid submitting a general one size fits all application, don’t use what she calls “beyond boring” cliches about yourself, and “duties and responsibilities” resumes are a thing of the past.
Instead, Bernard argues you should provide examples, such as data and figures, of how you have made a difference on the job.
She says employers have a “what’s in it for me” mentality and encourages providing concrete evidence of what you’ve done.
