Gros Morne National Park is opting to not participate in the provincial spruce budworm spray program.
Spruce Budworms are pests that can cause damage to forests as they feed on fir and spruce trees.
While an outbreak can have negative effects on forestry, the Park notes it is a natural ecosystem process that can be beneficial to forest diversification and renewal.
After reviewing evidence as well as feedback from a public consultation process, it was determined that participating in the province’s Early Intervention Program could impact the integrity of the forest ecosystem.
While they won’t be participating in the program, Parks Canada says they will still support research and monitoring.
