Some areas of the island got a good drenching on the weekend. The much-needed rain began last night on the Avalon Peninsula but much sooner in the west. Stephenville had 60 mm down by suppertime yesterday.
Route 460 between Marches Point and Sheaves Cove is impassable due to a road washout. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is on the scene and drivers are asked to stay clear of the area for the time being.
All of this follows a week of hot and humid weather; temperatures this week will be nowhere near the highs experienced last week.
The dry conditions over the last week or so resulted in extreme forest fire index readings for many parts of the island on the weekend. It even prompting warnings from various municipal fire departments.
Yesterday’s rain, however, reduced the forest fire index to low for nearly all of the province.
