The President of the Nunatsiavut Government is urging Canadians to mark Canada Day as a time to reflect on what true reconciliation with Indigenous peoples really means.
Johannes Lampe says the discovery of the remains of 215 children and 751 unmarked graves near residential schools in Kamloops and the Cowessess First Nation has opened up many wounds—even amongst the Inuit of Labrador.
He says all Canadians can look back on how far we have come, but serious thought must also be given to how much further the country still needs to go before there is true reconciliation.
Lampe encourages all Labrador Inuit, whether they plan to celebrate Canada Day or not, to wear orange as a sign of respect to those affected by residential schools.
Canada Day events in Nunatsiavut are organized by the five Labrador Inuit community Governments.
The Nunatsiavut Government will support each in whatever they choose to do this year.
