More than two years after it was first announced, the province’s Serious Incident Response Team is up and fully operational.
SIRT-NL had previously been working with other agencies to investigate serious incidents involving police with the agency acting in an oversight role.
Director Mike King issued a statement this morning via Twitter.

SIRT-NL is now capable of conducting its own investigations, determining whether or not charges in a particular case should be laid.
Serious incidents are those involving serious injury, death, sexual offence, domestic violence, or any matter of significant public interest arising from the actions of a police officer in Newfoundland and Labrador.
