Canada will soon be closer to closing the wage gap between men and women with the introduction of the Pay Equity Act this year.
Minister of Labour Filomena Tassi says the act will come into effect on August 31.
Minister Tassi says the Pay Equity Act will set in place long-term sustainable changes to ensure that women’s work is valued and compensated fairly.
The regulations are now public and will be used to ensure that federally regulated private and public workplaces receive equal pay for work of equal value.
Once the Act comes into effect, employers with ten or more employees will have three years to come up with and implement proactive pay equity plans.
Canada’s first Pay Equity Commissioner Karen Jensen will be responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Act.
Based on the most recent data, for every dollar earned by a man in Canada, women earn 89 cents—measured in hourly wages for full-time and part-time workers.
