It was a chilly night on the island as northerly winds descended on us. Overnight lows dipped to 5 degrees or less in most areas and, in some cases, below freezing. For example, it was the coldest July night in Buchans in the past 25 years.
Meanwhile, the storm Elsa is approaching the island and will deliver quite a punch of western and northern Newfoundland according to meteorologist Wanda Batten at the Gander Weather Office.
The west coast is in for a total of about 50 mm of rain today and tomorrow but some areas could see 60 or 70 mm.
In the east, winds will gust in coastal areas to 60 or 70 so anyone thinking of going on the water to catch a cod should take that into consideration.
