COVID case numbers are such that the world could soon be getting to the point of vaccine or virus.
That’s according to Memorial University Professor of Virology and Immunology Dr. Rod Russell who was reacting to a sudden increase in case numbers in countries with high vaccination rates.
As the Delta variant becomes the dominant strain, the UK, Israel, and the US are all seeing sudden surges in case numbers. The two doses of the COVID vaccine appear to be more effective against the Delta variant than a single dose.
Dr. Russell, who has been watching the evolving situation, says while COVID case numbers dropped dramatically after vaccine programs rolled out, COVID numbers are now on the rise and most of those new cases are being reported among those who are not vaccinated.
He says we’re nearing a stage where “if you’re not vaccinated, you’re going to get the virus.”
Meanwhile, The provincial government will resume reporting COVID case numbers today.
Public health officials have not released any public numbers since Friday. Yesterday was a provincial government holiday.
The latest numbers will be released this afternoon. The regular live COVID briefing isn’t scheduled until next Wednesday, July 21.
