The St. John’s Status of Women’s Council is introducing the province’s first Managed Alcohol Program at its St. John’s shelter.
The harm reduction program recognizes that some people can’t quit alcohol cold-turkey, and the new program has been made possible through funding available through the federal substance use and addictions program.
Executive Director Laura Winter says the program is for women who are not ready to stop or cannot stop drinking altogether and provides them with a safe and measured source of alcohol.
The program, which she calls “a first in the community” helps prevent withdrawal.
