Marine Atlantic is adding a new vessel to its fleet, albeit not until 2024.
The ferry operator says it has inked a five-year deal with U.K.-based Stena North Sea Ltd. to charter a new so-called “ro-pax” vessel for its fleet.
Ro-pax refers to roll-on/roll-off ferries that can also accommodate passengers.
The ice-class ship is about 200 metres long with 146 passenger cabins, some of which are pet-friendly, as well as 40 passenger pods.
It also features energy-efficient technology, including dual fuel systems and battery operation to reduce carbon emissions.
Marine Atlantic will have the option to buy the vessel once the five-year term expires.
The ship will be able to service both the Port aux Basque and Argentia runs.
