A woman originally from Afghanistan who is now living in this province is detailing some of the chaos and fear being felt in her native country after the Taliban seized control of the nation.
Khadija Ibrahim moved to Canada in 1997 and has been living in Newfoundland and Labrador for the last 10 years. She describes the current situation as “devastating.”
She says for Afghans living in western countries like Canada, there was hope that Afghanistan would be rebuilt and that there would be peace. However, with the Taliban in power, she says there is little hope for any type of democracy or women’s rights.
Ibrahim doesn’t think that anything can be done now in terms of support and that we must “watch in horror” as the situation unfolds.
She notes that the Taliban has said things will be different this time, to which she says they’ll have to wait and see—but what they’re hearing on the ground is a different story.
As an example, Ibrahim refers to her cousin whose abusive husband was put in jail. Now, all prisoners have been released and allowed back into the general population. She questions how much hope there is.
