The RNC Mounted Unit has welcomed its newest officer with a graduation ceremony today.
Constable Gwen Stacey will officially join the unit, after completing a demanding fifteen-week Equestrian Training Course, under the direction of retired Constable George Horan.
An RNC officer since 2008, Stacey says it has long been her dream to join the Mounted Unit, and that she’s most looking forward to “getting out, riding, engaging with the community, and having some fun while policing.”
While the RNC’s Mounted Unit is a great way to engage with the public, the animals themselves are great tools for officers in their own right.
Police Chief Patrick Roche says the program as it relates to equine therapy, is designed for first responders.
“It’s the calming effect of these animals. Frontline officers are more susceptible to PTSD,” says Roche. “The equine therapy program is another way to offer therapy for our members. I think the benefits are almost immeasurable.”
The Chief notes that the program is available to any officer who wishes to partake. Those making use of the service are reporting positive impacts.
