A man known for being wrongfully convicted of murder almost 30 years ago has been named St. John’s Rotary Club’s firefighter of the year.
Lieut. Greg Parsons was presented with the award at Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s this afternoon.
It marks yet another significant accomplishment for Parsons, who was just 22 when he was sentenced to life in prison for the 1991 murder of his mother, Catherine Carroll.
Parsons served almost two months before being released on bail pending appeal.
He was cleared of all charges several years later through DNA evidence.
Brian Doyle has since been convicted and is serving his sentence for the crime.
Parsons’ wife Tina, along sons Josh and Zachary were also on hand for today’s event.
Zachary became a firefighter two years ago, following in his father’s footsteps.
