Opposition Leader David Brazil is cautioning against a whole scale privatization of the provincial ferry service.
Brazil represents the residents of Bell Island, who have encountered less than reliable ferry service over the years. The same is true of other communities which rely on ferry boats like Fogo Island and Change Islands.
The recent PERT report recommends privatization of the province’s coastal ferries to cut costs and improve reliability, but Brazil cautions one size doesn’t necessarily fit all.
“People flippantly say it should be privatized, thinking that that may improve it,” says Brazil, but a more holistic approach needs to be taken. He says there are a lot of considerations including collective agreements in place, and how the ferries are run.
